Ed & Vi Brown moved to Borger in November, 1944
to establish a Funeral Home and Flower Shop. They had moved from
Austin, Texas where
they met and were married, and where Ed managed the Weed Funeral
Home for 15 years. During that time he was commissioned as a funeral
director
in charge of establishing the State Cemetery, where many Texas
heroes' graves were relocated.
They had two sons, Bob & Jim and one daughter,
Sue, who were all born in Borger. They bought into the business
owned by Blackburn- Shaw Funeral Directors of Amarillo, who had previously
bought out the Powell Funeral Home and Flower Shop, at which time
was
Hutchinson County's only Funeral Home. The business was located
at 104 N Main Street.
In 1955, they bought out Blackburn's interest
in
the business, and the business was operated in the name, of Ed
Brown Funeral Directors and Brown's Flowers. In November 1963,
they moved
into their present location. This was Ed's dream come true when
he built "The Chapel of the Fountains," as he has always
felt that fountains in a funeral home chapel would create a feeling
of peace
and tranquility.
His hopes and dreams were again fulfilled when
their two ons, Bob & Jim, decided to enter the family business
in September, 1965 when the name of the firm changed to Ed Brown & Sons
Funeral Directors & Brown's Flowers. Their association with
their father only lasted three years, as Ed died on December 31,
1968 after
a brief
illness. At that time, Bob & Jim, with their mother took over
the business, Bob as manager of the Flower shop and Jim as manager
of the
Funeral Home. In early 1990, Jim bought his brother's interest
in the business and became sole owner with his wife Carolyn.
In 2001
Jim passed
away leaving Carolyn to run the operation. To present, Carolyn
is carrying on The Brown Legacy.
